At Sam Adams Elementary School, we use the CHAMPS management system. Each letter stands for an area where we have certain expectations for each activity. The C in CHAMPS stands for "Conversation". In each activity a "conversation level expectations is given". For example, during work time in my art room, the conversation level is expected to be 1 or 2....meaning they may talk as they work in a quiet (restaurant-type) voice level. The H in CHAMPS stands for "Help"....what are students expected to do if they need help with something during each activity? Again, for work time, the H expectation is that students would raise their hands and wait for me to come to them if they need help. The A in CHAMPS stands for "Action"....what is the expectation for what students should be doing during an activity? During work time, the actions students are expected to show are working on their assigned projects, following along in class or listening to the teacher. The M in CHAMPS is for "Movement". During work time, the movement expectations for students are to stay in their seats and keep working unless retrieving some needed supply. The P in CHAMPS stands for "Participation". During work time, the participation expectations for students are to answer questions, work on their own projects and to be listening for and following teacher directions. Finally the S in CHAMPS stands for "Success". Students who follow the CHAMPS expectations help us all achieve SUCCESS! Each activity throughout the day has its own set of CHAMPS expectations. That includes lining up, center time, Read-to-Self time, transitions, cleaning up, beginning and end of the day, hallway time, library time, lunchroom and recess times....pretty much everything we do at Sam Adams. Your child should be able to state the CHAMPS expectations for any part of their school day.
